The building: Biosafety level 4 rating

The National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (NEIDL) needed to be one of the most safely designed and constructed buildings in the world. As part of a national network of secure facilities dedicated to the study of new and emerging infectious diseases, technicians at the NEIDL perform testing and diagnostics, research and develop treatments, and act as a national response team in the event of an epidemic or biodefense emergency.

The building: Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital

The Fort Polk army base in Louisiana was built during World War II as a home base for training soldiers to fight the overseas war. One of its main arteries is a full-service hospital with active operating and delivery rooms, serving a population of over 130,000�Fort Polk residents.

Challenge #1

Install a new roof with minimal disruption to hospital operations.

Challenge #2

The hospital�s 125,000 square-foot roof, made up of built-up roofing (BUR) over concrete, had many fresh air intakes that had to be diligently protected from the odors and fumes associated with a construction project.

Challenge #3

Finally, the existing roof had sections covered with 3 x 12-foot concrete footings supporting damaged and unusable solar collection units.
